The Clarion Serving the Brevard College community since 1935 Volume 71, Issue 3 Locals voice concern over terrorist watch list by Zach Harding Staff Writer It’s easy. In less ttian a minute an internet user can obtain detailed informa tion about local registered sex offenders. Local police reports and criminal records can be found with relative ease, all public information. Can you find out that there are people living in your area that are “flagged” to be on a terrorist watch list? No. And some people are concerned with their safety because of this. Recently, a man in Hendersonville was charged with attempted homicide, break ing and entering, kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. This man, Mohammed Alhilo, was involved with sev eral businesses in the Hendersonville area, including a Subway sandwich shop in the Town of Mills River. This was not the first incident Alhilo had been involved in. There were several prior charges which concerned assault and other criminal activities. As reported in a Times-News article, Detective Walt Harper said “We knew he was here the FBI would contact local law enforcement every time we had dealings with him.” Why did the F.B.I. contact the local law enforcement every time an issue came up with Alhilo? As reported by One Sheriff’s Department Detective, Alhilo was on the federal terrorist watch list. This list and its occupants are inten tionally kept from public view, and later re porting indicated that authorities should not even have revealed this information after the incident took place. A Times-News article also stated that Police chief Donnie Parks said he could not comment on the detective’s report. An article quote him as saying: “There is cer tain information that law enforcement should not be giving out at the request of the FBI and director of homeland security.” According to a later article, Henderson county Sheriff George Erwin said that an officer should not have divulged the watch list information.
